The hearing loss rehab institute for hard of hearing people invites you to attend a three day institute on coping with hearing loss. The hearing loss rehab institute provides a valuable service to the hearing impaired. The population of hard of hearing people is ten times larger than the deaf population. Hearing loss is considered one of the largest disability groups of people in America.
What: The Hearing Loss Rehab Institute will be conducting a three-day institute helping people who struggle with hearing loss. It is packed with valuable ways to cope with problems of hearing in the workplace, classroom, doctor’s office, social events, home and church.
Why: There are 37,000 people in Hamilton County who need help in communicating with others. They have a hard time understanding conversation in a normal hearing environment. This does not count thousands of hard of hearing people in surrounding counties. They need help in communication skills.
When: The Hearing Loss Rehab Institute begins with registration on Wed. March 14, 2012 with orientation from 7 to 9 p.m. Classes on Thursday, March 15 and Friday March 16, 2012 will be from 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Where: Sessions will be held at the Chattanooga Convention and Trade Center on Carter Street, Chattanooga, TN, 37402. The Institute will be headquartered at the Staybridge suites (hotel) at 1300 Carter Street in Chattanooga, TN 37402.
Who: For all hard of hearing people who desire help with hearing loss and any hearing friend, co-worker or family member.
How much? Registration is $ 299.00 for each hard of hearing person and $99.00 for second member of the family. We are offering a Speial discount of $100.00 off for the hard of hearing person.
Benefit: All classes will be hearing accessible and are equipped with our Williams Sound FM listening devices for hard of hearing to see, hear and understand everything said and done. The institute is a non-medical hearing loss rehabilitation service that takes place when you have exhausted all other resources.

There are approximately 48 million Americans who suffer from some degree of hearing impairment. 2 million Americans are functionally deaf, but do not know Sign Language. 500,000 Americans are culturally Deaf and speak only American Sign Language. People with hearing loss need rehabilitation training to improve communication skills. Hearing aids are not a cure for hearing loss, only an aid. There are no perfect medical or technical solutions for hearing loss. We must use other ways to improve life and daily communication skills.
We as hearing loss support specialists have heard the cry of hard of hearing people. We have listened with intensity to the struggles you have to reconnect with your loved one and friends. Each handicapped person has to deal with hearing loss from a different perspective and in a different environment. We have identified many of your concerns about hearing loss and will address them at the Hearing Loss Rehab Institute.
Our goal is to ease the suffering and pain you experience with hearing loss by giving you tools to overcome challenges you face daily. We are working along with audiologists to provide non-medical aural (hearing) rehabilitation.
Topics to be taught are improving quality of life by adjusting to hearing loss. Making hearing loss visible to change the way others think about hard of hearing people. Our goal is to minimize communication breakdowns by developing new skills that can be put into practice immediately. You will learn the power of lip reading, the visual manifestation of the spoken word. You will walk away from this rehabilitation institute with hearing techniques and strategies that can change your life.
David M. Harrison will be leading the Hearing Loss Rehab Institute. He is the Founder and Director of the Lip Reading Academy in Chattanooga. Harrison was born hard of hearing and understands the plight of hearing loss. He is a committed advocate for hearing accessibility in the home, school, workplace and church. He is a graduate from Taylor University in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He has studied at the American Academy of Hearing Loss Support Specialists. He and his wife Cathy, an RN, have taken the Summer Institute of Linguistics, in Grand Forks, ND. They have served as missionaries for over forty years.
